With every family. For every child.
Every Child is a national advocacy campaign aimed at promoting the wellbeing of children and young people. We are determined. We know that with strong support, stable relationships, and a safe place to call home every child and young person can thrive. This means supporting families to navigate tough times. We know that when this goes wrong - and support for families isn’t available early on - problems get worse and our children and young people pay the highest price.
We recognise the leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders across the country to advance the interests of their children, young people and families. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are removed from their families at ten times the rate of non-Indigenous children, this is a national shame and Every Child is committed to supporting the self-determination and advocacy work of our First Nations people as they work to ensure their children and young people have the opportunity to grow up well cared for and safe in family and community.
Australia's children need us to get this right, and we can.
What are we asking for?
The best national foundation any country can have into the future is healthy, safe, well-educated children and young people who are confident in themselves and their future. The wellbeing of every child and young person in Australia must be elevated as a national priority – as a nation-building strategy. When the public thinks of nation-building, they generally think ‘big’ - of bridges, roads and structures. We want our community leaders and the public to thing big about children and young people – as the most important foundation we have to strengthen our nation. This is why we are calling on governments to initiate the most significant and valuable nation-building project that has ever been undertaken – the Every Child National Wellbeing Commitment.
How will the Every Child National Wellbeing Commitment make sure children, young people and families get the right support at the right time?
We are calling on governments to:
- Establish a National Child Development Fund and a mechanism, such as a National Council for Children, Young People and Families – that reports on national child wellbeing indicators, facilitates innovation in service delivery to focus on prevention and early support, service and workforce reform, and expansion of the evidence base for action. This Council is to comprise of government and nongovernment, as well as young people from diverse backgrounds.
- Adopt national wellbeing indicators and targets for child health, education, justice and wellbeing.
- Establish an effective mechanism, within the National Council for Children, Young People and Families to support the active participation of young people in advancing their wellbeing.
- Recognise the leadership and strategies advocated by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, to improve the wellbeing of their children and young people, as a priority for action.
Who has built the Every Child campaign?
Every Child was created and is currently led by a Steering Committee comprising members of organisations across Australia who are committed to promoting the wellbeing of children and young people. The Benevolent Society is the auspicing party of the Every Child campaign, providing the secretariat and funding for the campaign.
